Massage Therapy

For Headaches, Jaw Tension & TMJ Disorder

Headaches and jaw tension can have a significant impact on daily life, affecting concentration, sleep, work, and physical activity. In some cases, muscular tension and movement restrictions in the jaw, neck, shoulders, and upper back may contribute to symptoms.

As a Registered Massage Therapist in Vancouver, I provide treatment focused on reducing muscle tension, improving mobility, and addressing areas that may be contributing to headache and jaw-related discomfort. Treatment is tailored to your individual symptoms, goals, and comfort level.

Common Causes of Headaches and Jaw Tension

Headaches and jaw discomfort can develop from a variety of factors, including:

  • Muscle tension in the neck, shoulders, and jaw

  • Stress-related tension and clenching

  • Teeth grinding (bruxism)

  • Prolonged desk work or poor workstation setup

  • Repetitive postures

  • Reduced mobility in the neck and upper back

  • Previous injuries affecting the neck or jaw

For many people, symptoms are influenced by a combination of factors rather than a single cause.

How Massage Therapy Can Help

Massage therapy may help reduce tension in the muscles surrounding the neck, shoulders, upper back, and jaw. Treatment focuses on improving mobility, decreasing muscular tightness, and addressing movement restrictions that may contribute to discomfort.

Treatment may help with:

  • Tension-related headaches

  • Neck and shoulder tightness associated with headaches

  • Jaw muscle tension

  • Clenching-related discomfort

  • Reduced mobility in the neck and upper back

Each treatment is individualized based on your presentation and goals.

Jaw Tension and TMJ-Related Symptoms

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is the joint that connects the jaw to the skull. Tension in the surrounding muscles may contribute to symptoms such as:

  • Jaw tightness

  • Facial tension

  • Clicking or popping sensations

  • Difficulty opening the mouth comfortably

  • Discomfort with chewing

  • Morning jaw soreness related to clenching or grinding

Massage therapy may help address muscular tension associated with these symptoms and can be incorporated as part of a broader management approach when appropriate.

Kim is amazing! She really thinks outside the box, focusing on areas I’d never have connected to my pain. She specializes in deep tissue massage and uses techniques I haven’t experienced with other RMTs. Kim has been a huge part of my recovery after an accident, and before that, she helped me manage tension and strain from sports and long hours at a desk. I can’t recommend her enough!

I just had my second massage session with Kim, and I couldn’t be more impressed! From the moment I arrived, she made me feel completely at ease. The experience was both relaxing and therapeutic. I came in with some lingering tension in my shoulders and lower back, and Kim was very attentive to my needs, focusing on the areas that needed the most attention. I could feel the difference immediately after the session, and I’ve been much more mobile and pain-free since then.
